Ajay Devgn’s Diljale Taught Harman Baweja The First Lesson Of Filmmaking – One Question That Framed His Vision!
Thirty years after Diljale released, Actor, Producer, and Writer Harman Baweja looks back at the film with more than just nostalgia. For him, it takes him back to one of the earliest moments when he began to understand filmmaking and, more importantly, the role of a director.
Harman was just 15 when he visited the sets of Diljale, directed by his father and veteran filmmaker Harry Baweja. He was watching the shoot of Shaam Hai Dhuan Dhuan and remembers being surrounded by some of the biggest names from the film. Saroj Khan was choreographing the song, Veeru Devgan was handling the action, the actors were doing their parts and every department had its own expert working on the set.
Harman Baweja Recalls His First Filmmaking Lesson On Diljale
Watching everyone around him, Harman was genuinely confused about what his father was doing while everyone else seemed to have a clearly defined job.

“I remember sitting and having lunch and then looking at my father and saying, ‘I’m very confused, what do you do on set?’ Everybody on that lunch table laughed. I was like, Veeruji is doing the action, Sarojji is doing the choreography, Naidu uncle is doing the camera work. All the actors are doing their job. So I was like, what are you doing as a director? Because everybody’s doing their job,”Harman recalls.
Harry Baweja’s Lesson On A Director’s Vision
Harry Baweja’s answer became one of the first lessons about filmmaking that Harman remembers clearly. Instead of simply explaining the role, he told his son that a director’s job is to bring together all the different departments and their individual talents and turn them into one vision for the film.
“He just looked at me and said, ‘You’re absolutely right.’ He told me the job of a director is to effectively tell and narrate a story in the audiovisual medium. These HODs, these technicians, these crews — they’re a plethora of talent, but eventually they all have to fall into the vision of what the director wants to say,”Harman says.
For a 15-year-old watching his father work, it was a simple but important lesson. He was seeing first-hand how a director brings together actors, technicians and every department on a set and makes them work towards the same story.
The Song That Taught Harman To Trust His Instinct
There was another lesson from the same shoot that stayed with him. It came while working on Shaam Hai Dhuan Dhuan. Harman remembers that when the song was first recorded, neither Harry Baweja nor composer Anu Malik was completely convinced by it. His father, who had a strong ear for music, felt the song needed to be revisited. The two went back to the song, worked on it again and eventually decided to trust their instinct. The track went on to become one of the popular songs from Diljale.
For Harman, it became another early lesson in trusting your own conviction, even when the first reaction may not be in your favor. Looking back today, Harman says he feels fortunate to have witnessed that entire process at such a young age and to have seen some of the industry’s finest talents at work.
“Today, I feel so blessed that I had the chance to witness my father and all these great actors, technicians and choreographers doing their magic. Being around them at that age and seeing how a film comes together has definitely helped me become a better filmmaker. I carry those learnings with me as I continue to build my own journey and carry forward my father’s legacy,”he says.
Harman Baweja’s Journey From Acting To Production
Thirty years later, Harman is running his own show, and those two moments — one about vision, the other about conviction — read almost like a blueprint for the career he has built for himself.
Following his acting comeback with Scoop, Harman has moved firmly into production and now serves as Managing Director at Baweja Studios, working full-time as a producer. He has also ventured into writing, co-writing and producing films like Mrs. and System, while continuing to back stories he believes can connect with audiences.
From Haq to shows like Kaptaan and Bhagwat Chapter One: Raakshas, his slate reflects that intent. With Dil Ka Darwaja and Jugaddu in the pipeline and Captain India now on floors, Harman is building Baweja Studios with a clear focus on stories, talent and long-term vision — in many ways, carrying forward the same instinct his father showed decades ago: bringing the right people together, trusting conviction, and seeing a film through from idea to screen.
Looking back at Diljale today, then, is more than just nostalgia for Harman. It takes him back to one of the earliest sets where he saw first-hand what it takes to lead a film, work with a team, and turn a vision into something audiences can experience. Three decades later, those lessons continue to find their way into the work he is doing at Baweja Studios.
